The Summit

1st Nov 2013

For the past few days, I've been back in Ireland at The Summit in Dublin with my colleague Tyson Miller. We're here with Recon Instruments, and we've met some of the smartest, coolest and most interesting people in the tech community. It's been fantastic to talk with these people, listening to the problems they are trying to solve and the challenges that they faced head on.

There were some really amazing projects, and the talks we attended provided some great ideas that we can take away and work with. We were invited to an evening with IDA Ireland in the beautiful House of Lords in the Bank of Ireland building in the city centre. Meeting some of the conference speakers such as Tony Hawk and Jamie Heaslip proved a highlight, but listening to the insight of Jordan Casey - a 13 year old developer who has launched several apps in the iOS App Store and launched his second startup TeachWare was fascinating.

I'm 13, in 10 years I'll be 23, and will have 10 years experience as a developer — Jordan Casey

Day Two was our day in the booth. We were based next to the guys from http://www.screach.tv who have an amazing product that can detect your presence with zero interaction. It's a product for venues such as bars and pubs, that can provide rich content, and interactions with quizes, checkins etc.

We met a wide range of people - those who had preordered and hadn't even seen the product, people who owned the Goggles and loved it, and other's who hadn't heard of us but when they tried on the product couldn't quite believe the functionality we jam into them.

The most important thing in creating companies is you need a concentration of talent. It’s like creating a world sports team or something, you really want to focus your talent on a particular area. — Elon Musk

To close The Summit, Elon Musk CEO/CTO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors along with An Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Enda Kenny and Sherpa Global's Shervin Pishevar had a fireside chat chaired by Storyful's Mark Little. There some great one liner's from Enda Kenny about bringing Tesla to Europe and bringing the Headquarters to Dublin; and Elon Musk presented ideas such as free third level education for students willing to setup a startup in Ireland when they graduate.

I haven't even mentioned the parties - the Opening Night, the Night Summit, the Pub Crawls, the Closing Night - not forgetting all the side events that were hosted in and around Dublin during the week. The opportunities for networking at all of these events is not to be missed.

Definitely putting this one in the calendar for 2014!
